AUG 19, 2004 (newstodate): The fate of the "salmon freighter" serving the exporters in Northern Norway with a direct service to Japan is still in the balance after the planned suspension during the slack summer season.
-Hopes are to re-install the service sometime in September, but this depends entirely on commitments from Norwegian exporters of salmon, says a centrally placed industry source.
The source admits that there is currently no signed contract to secure the resumption of services, but the industry is only now returning to pre-summer levels of activity so it is still too early make a final assesment.
The weekly service, operated with a FedEx MD-11 allowing for 20 tonnes of ex-Norway cargo on its route starting from Frankfurt and transiting at Evenness on its route to Narita via Anchorage, started in April this year.
Provided the market demands the service, alternate plans concerning routing and operator may be considered, too, the source says.
