AUG 20, 2004 (newstodate): Lithuanian Airlines Cargo is basically optimistic about longer-term prospects for growth, but the trend is still below expectations.
-During the first five months og this year Lithuanian Airlines Cargo saw a six percent increase in volumes, and we did expect volumes to grow faster after May 1 when the country was admitted into the EU, says Andrejus Trimailovas, Lithuanian Airlines Cargo manager.
-Traffic has however been a bit slower than expedeted, due to a variety of reasons. First, the changes of cargo procedures following the EU entry affected operations during the first weeks. Next competition has become very intense this year, and we are also noticing that both speed and reliability of cargo trucking services have increased as border crossings are now faster and easier, he says.
Mr Trimailovas says a further reason for the restrained growth in air cargo volumes is the fact that passenger loads on the aircraft have grown so fast that the cargo capacity on the aircraft used on the routes in and out of the country has been significantly reduced.
