AUG 06, 2004 (newstodate): Hungarian carrier Malev and Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines plan to set up Budapest as a joint Central European cargo hub.
This is part of the agreement between the two companies that launched their coooperation on the new route Budapest-Beijing from August 2, initially operating with aircraft from Hainan Airlines.
This represents new opportunities for Hungarian businesses in the export market since Malev will be able to despatch nearly 10 tonnes of cargo per flight directly to the largest cities in China.
Also part of the new cooperation, Malev has been appointed distributor of cargo arriving from China and Exclusive GSA of Hainan Airlines throughout Europe.
Three cargo-related contracts have been concluded: a GSA contract under which Malv will act as the general sales agent for HNA in Hungary and Europe, a prorate contract regulating terms of carriage on each other's flights, and a cargo handling contract under which Malev will conduct handling activities in Budapest for Hainan flights.
Industry sources say Hainan Airlines may further be among the bidders for Malev, currently in a privatisation process expected to be completed either late this year or by early 2005.
