AUG 25, 2004 (newstodate): The Czech air cargo market is definitely growing, but airlines are still hesitant to throw in wide-body cargo capacity to the US.
-As there is only limited growth in the European airfreight volumes in and out of the Czech Republic due to the strong competition from cheap and fast trucking services, the focus is especially on US and Far Eastern air cargo, with some growth in the Middle East markets as well, says Pavel Kotek, WECO AirCargo Czech Republic general manager.
-There is a strong demand in the Czech Republic for US airfreight, and today we either truck it into European hubs, or fly it on narrow-body aircraft for transfer at other airports, he says.
-We could definitely need a direct wide-body service to the US market as we have now obtained to the Far East market since the start of Korean Air Cargo's thrice-weekly service to Seoul, says Pavel Kotek.
CSA operates a direct service with A310 aircraft into New York, but "the cargo capacity on this aircraft is very limited, and much more is needed", says Mr Kotek.
Weco AirCargo's airline customers in Prague include SAS, FedEx, LTU, Coyne Airways, Dutch Caribbean Airlines, and British Midlands Baby.
