SEP 21, 2004 (newstodate): Spiralling costs of jet fuel are forcing jet fuel surcharges up and up..
With effect from October 4, Lufthansa Cargo is now increasing its fuel surcharge again, from 0.25 to 0.30 euro per kilo actual freight weight.
-The Fuel Price Index exceeded 240 points for two consecutive weeks back in August. At the time we temporarily deferred an increase in the fuel surcharge, and decided instead to closely monitor developments in fuel prices, which were fluctuating strongly. But as we have seen, the upward trend in the price of crude oil products has contin-ued unabated. Since the Fuel Price Index now stands at 249, and is well above the threshold mark of 240 points, an increase in the fuel surcharge is unavoidable, says Bernhard Kindelbacher, Lufthansa Cargo sen VP marketing.
Other airlines will follow suit, but according to individual schemes as they are not permitted to fix prices on a collective basis.
