JAN 27, 2005 (newstodate): Amidst a vigorous business expansion, Icelandair has signed an USD 650 million order with Boeing for delivery of 10 Boeing 737-800, with options for another five aircraft.
The airline intends to lease the aircraft to airlines in China and other countries.
A new business unit within Icelandair, headed by Halldor Vilhjalmsson, will be established for aircraft leasing.
Marketing will provided by Sunrock, which is owned by the Japanese company Sojitz.
-Strong demand for the 737 among lessees and the 737's economic performance and investment value make it the best choice for our new leasing venture. We have already taken the first step into the leasing market with three Boeing 737-500s that we lease to airBaltic in partnership with others, and we see this deal as a critical step to develop this business further, says Hannes Smarason, executive chairman of the board of the Flugleidir Icelandair Group.
