FEB 24, 2005 (newstodate): Albania is seeing a significant increase in demands for air travel.
In 2004 the number of passengers incrased by 13 percent, while the volume of flight operations grew by 18 percent.
To cope with the demand, the country needs an improved civil aviation infrastructure, including new domestic airports.
Albania is therefore building a new airport at Kukes, to be inaugurated in June, and plans for two more domestic airports at Vlora and Saranda.
The country's only international airport, Tirana Mother Theresa Airport, linking with Rome, Milan, Athens, Frankfurt, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Sofia and Istanbul, has now embarked on an intense modernisation and expansion program led by the US-German Tirana Airport Group that has obtained a concession to operate and manage the airport for 20 years.
Plans also include new domestic airports at Gjirokastra, Korca and Skhodra.
