FEB 16, 2005 (newstodate): From January, Italian airfreight carrier Ocean Airlines calls at Almaty Airport, Kazakhstan, four times weekly.
The airline has selected Almaty for its technical stop on the route between Brescia and Hong Kong, served with an ex-Lufthansa Cargo Boeing 747-200 aircraft.
Among the airport's other users is Asiana Airline that operates a twice-weekly service between Seoul and Almaty with Boeing 767 aircraft.
Lufthansa Cargo, British Airways and KamAir also operate at Almaty that is striving to become a prime transit hub for European-Asian cargo flights.
Work is currently being performed to construct a new runway at Almaty Airport.
-In terms of operations we have seen an annual increase by 15-20 percent during the last two years, and we have abundant infrastructure capacity to support this growth in the future as well, says Vasiliy V. Ni, Almaty airfreight director.
