MAR 03, 2005 (newstodate): Cargo facilitites at Astana Airport, Kazakhstan, have been significantly upgraded as part of the modernisation scheme of the new airport.
The airport's new cargo terminal is a two-tier building with a warehouse capacity of 600 tonnes, and a daily production capacity of 300 tonnes.
The airport has the ambition to become an important hub for cargo and passenger transport between Europe and Asia following a predicted growth rate of passenger traffic of 7.5 percent by 2005.
To boost the standing of its new capital since 1997, Kazakhstan will now require foreign airlines operating into the country to add Astana to their network.
Among the airlines currently serving Kazakhstan are Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Transaero and Turkish Airlines that all operate routes into the country's former capital Almaty.
