AUG 04, 2005 (newstodate): The first flight from Baku to the Turkish-held Northern part of Cyprus by the Azerbaijan carrier Imair Airline on July 27 has provoked strong repercussions.
The Cyprus government on the Greek part of the island, EU member since May last year, has launched strong protests against what is termed an "illegal" landing, and has urged Azerbaijan to respect international law and the sovereignty of the Cyprus government.
The Cyprus government has also informed ICAO and Eurocontrol of the incident, and made clear that a continuation of the illegal practice may influence on Cyprus' relations to Azerbaijan, including its views on EU assistance to the country.
