Nov 20, 2006 (newstodate): An Airbus aircraft acquisition has become a hot political potato in Moldova.
The government has proposed that the state-owned airline Air Moldova acquires an Airbus A320 currently operated on a lease contract.
The government argues that the aircraft can be acquired for a sum that equals five years' leasing payments, while it can be operated for at least 10 more years after that and eventually be converted into freighter aircraft.
The opposition, however, claims that Air Moldova is on the verge of bankruptcy, and the aircraft, if acquired, will be used to hedge bank investors' assets.
