Feb 23, 2007 (newstodate): Financed by EU funds, work will soon start on modernisation of the Lithuanian Palanga Airport.
A tender for the work was won by Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group and the Lithuanian company, Lemminkainen Lietuva.
The runway will be extended by 150 meters at both ends, to result in a take-off and landing distance at 2,300 m, and the runway will also be widened to 45 m.
The airfield lighting systems will be adapted to meet ICAO CAT 2 standards, and existing lamps will be replaced with new energy-saving halogen lamps.
A new approach lighting system will enable precision and non-precision approaches as well as approaches according to visual flight or instrument flight rules.
Apart from the new standard lighting systems for the taxiway and the runway as well as obstruction lighting, the landing zone will also be equipped with a lighting system.
In times of bad visibility, this will enable the pilot to maintain orientation after flying over the approach lighting system. For night operations and conditions of bad visibility, illuminated taxiway guidance signs will be installed.
