Aug 23, 2007 (newstodate): The Swedish Viking Airlines has taken the CAA ban on Swedish flights to Iraq to the government.
In 2005 Viking Airlines was the first European airline to launch regular flights to Erbil, in Kurdish Iraq and claims that no incident or disturbance to the operation has been reported during the period of flights.
In its appeal to the Swedish government to lift the ban on operations to Erbil, Viking Airlines among other arguments points to the fact that the insurance companies have not raised their premiums or changed their risk analysis of flights to Erbil.
Also no other European airlines have been banned from flying to Kurdish Iraq.
Viking Airlines also points out that the topography of Erbil is very different from that of Suleimaniyah where mountainous surroundings make the security situation more demanding and critical.
The incident that triggered the Swedish ban on Iraq flights occured after the take-off from Suleimaniyah by an aircraft from another Swedish airline.
The aircraft crew reported a missile attack on the aircraft, which has however still not been substantiated by any findings.
