Apr 10, 2008 (newstodate): Estonia's Tartu Ulenurme Airport will be developed to achieve status as an international airport.
The Estonian ministry of transport, Tartu City's govenment and representative from Tallinn Airport have agreed to a plan to upgrade the airport to international status before the end of this year.
Since 2005 the airport close to the border to Russia and Latvia has been owned by Tallinn Airport, Estonia's capital airport.
Extension of the runway to 1,800 m will be completed by the end of July, 2008, and new ILS and DME will be implemented late this autumn, or early spring 2009.
Also by early 2009, work will start on repair and modernisation of the airport's passenger terminal, allowing for Schengen traffic separation.
The airport hopes to see the start of Estonian Air flights, and airBaltic is also known to have shown interest in the airport.
