May 13, 2008 (newstodate): During this year's first quarter, Lufthansa Cargo lost ground in the Finnish export air cargo market.
-While the Finnish IATA air cargo market declined slightly with a two percent decrease, Lufthansa Cargo shrank even more, mainly due to the loss of some large accounts, says Kay Wichmann, Lufthansa Cargo general manager Nordics.
-Finnair Cargo has established itself firmly in the important niche of Asian traffic and is indeed doing nicely. For Lufthansa Cargo trucking times from the edge of Northern Europe to our freighter hubs in Germany constitute a disadvantage, and induces costs not easily reclaimed in a market with stiff competition on rates, and low yields.
-Like the Swedish market, Finland's air cargo market is dominated by few, large accounts that are thus crucial to the failure or success of any airline company.
-There is a substantial aircraft belly-hold capacity in the market, and like in Norway there is a significant market in Finland for express products where our parameters are fast and high quality service.
-But as in other markets we also see a tencency here for express shipments to slide into the standard cargo segment, while parts of the former standard cargo segment are moving into ocean transportation, says Mr Wichmann.
