Jun 19, 2008 (newstodate): Being rated Category 2 since September, 2003, Bulgaria has been upgraded by the U.S. Department of Transportations FAA to Category 1 status
As a Cat 2 country, Bulgaria that has not operated on routes to the USA since 1996 will now be allowed to open new Transatlantic flights with own aircraft to USA.
No Bulgarian carriers currently has the capacity or equipment to open flights to the USA, however.
The EU European Aviation Safety Agency is also currently assessing the possibility of lifting its restrictions on Bulgarian carriers' operations in EU airspace and airports, and the US action is likely to herald a new opening.
