Jun 23, 2008 (newstodate): Russia's first LCC, Sky Express is reportedly considering entering the charter flight business, as a complement to its domestic scheduled services.
Spiralling fuel costs, up 85 percent per flight hour since May 2007, make scheduled flight economics increasingly negative, while tourist charter flights from Russia to destinations in Europe will open a new, and more lucrative market where capacity is scarce.
Sky Express launched flights on January 29, 2007, and now operates a fleet of Boeing 737-300 and -500 aircraft that are allowed into Europe, while most Russian competitors in the charter market depend on Soviet-built aircraft that are not allowed into EU.
In May, 2008, Sky Express named William Boulter, formerly Virgin Atlantic Airways Commercial Director as Strategic Adviser to its Board of Directors, with the task of planning the future growth and expansion of the airline in the Russian market.
