Aug 7, 2008 (newstodate): Icelandair Cargo has started work on a new strategy plan to fill the void left after the decision by the airline board earlier this summer to rein in investments and scrap orders for new freighter aircraft.
The decision brought about the resignation of former cargo head Petur J Eiriksson, now replaced by Gunnar Mar Sigurfinnson as Icelandair Cargo managing director.
-I have spent the first months in this office probing into the air cargo business and the situation of Icelandair Cargo, and work on a new strategy is now starting, says Mr Sigurfinnson.
-We will probably need two or even three months to work out a new strategy for presentation to the board, so no details will be available before that. Whether the coming strategy will imply major changes or not will remain an open issue till then.
-Generally speaking, the current situation in the Icelandic market is rather difficult. The Icelandic currency has lost value, which should benefit exports, but at the same time Icelands fish quotas have been cut which will indeed affect us.
-Imports are definitely down these days, so European-US transit cargo seems to be the only viable option for growth right now, says Mr Sigurfinnson.
