Jan 22, 2009 (newstodate): Russia's Astrakhan Narimanovo Airport is waiting for a decision by the Federal government to invest in an extension of its runway.
The runway was lengthened in 2008 from 2,000 to 2,500m, and the airport is planning for a further exension by 700m to a total of 3,200m to allow for handling of even large commercial aircraft.
In September, 2008, the airport was acquired by the Russian investment company Novaport that will turn the airport into an important hub and logistics center for passenger and cargo traffic to Central Asia and the Middle East.
The Russian state remains in charge of the airport's runway, taxiways and primary infrastructure.
