Jan 8, 2009 (newstodate): The decision of Stockholm Skavsta Airport to retreat from airfreight handling in 2009 is seen as a new opportunity by other Swedish airports.
-The situation is rather new to us, but we are definitely to look into the opportunity of attracting more cargo traffic, says Mari Torstensson, Norrkoping Airport manager.
-We are of course first of all keen to attract more freighter traffic to Norrkoping, but handling and palletizing of trucked airfreight is also very attractive.
-As most other airport we have seen volumes down in 2008, but we were happy to see Icelandair Cargo concentrating their operations in Sweden, formerly spread between Jonkoping, Norrkoping and Malmo Sturup, to Norrkoping.
-Icelandair Cargo's traffic is primarily transport of Icelandic horses into Norrkoping, and unfortunately the ex-Sweden cargo destined for the US market dried up during the autumn. We are now, however, seeing slow signs of return loads on Icelandair Cargo's Boeing 757-200F freighters.
-All cargo handling at Norrkoping is provided by Cargo Center, and together we will now look into the market to identify potentials for growth by directing business from Skavsta to NOrrkoping, says Ms Torstensson.
