Oct 28, 2009 (newstodate): The news about the plan now discussed in the Lithuanian government for the country's future airport infrastructure is generating optimism in the industry.
-There are of course a wide range of legal problems and issues that have to be straightened out and solved, but after all it is highly encouraging to envisage a future for Kaunas Airport as a public limited company instead of today's state ownership, says Ricardas Vandzinskas, Kaunas Airport finance director.
-In the plans is a decision to complete this complex legal transition process by 2011, after which the Lithuanian airports will be free to act on commercial terms and to enter partnerships with private investors and partners. This will open up entirely new prospects for us.
-The three Lithuanian airport each have their own business positions and special competencies, and I do not see any competition between Kaunas Airport and Vilnius Airport. Vilnius Airport is the capital airport where the legacy carriers play their natural role, while Kaunas Airport is especially targeted by the low-cost carriers as well as cargo operators.
-Kanuas Airport is already operating very cost-efficiently and will have no problems with turning from state ownership to a future as a public limited company, says Mr Vandzinskas.
