Nov 25, 2009 (newstodate): Serbia may get a new international airport.
Plans are on the table for decommissioning the country's air force base at Ponikve and turning it into a civil airport, following on the signing of an agreement between Ponikve's mayor and the Serb minister of defense.
The plans for reconstruction of the airport will require some four years, but will hinge on the issue of financing costs estimated at around 25 mio euro.
Ponikve Air Force Base was damaged by NATO bombings during the civil war in the late 90'ies.
Since then, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has invested in reconstruction of the airport's 3,200m runway to prepare it for a role as an alternate airport.
