Dec 07, 2009 (newstodate): While still marked by the deep recession in the country's civil aviation since the start of this year, Lithuania's Vilnius Airport remains upbeat about prospects for a strong recovery in 2010.
-This year, the greatest slump in the number of passengers was noticed in March, when the airport served 43 percent less passengers, compared to the same period last year. However, since the end of spring, the number of passengers served by Vilnius Airport has been increasing, says Tomas Vaisvila, Vilnius Airport managing director.
The airport now expects to land at around 1.3 mio passengers in 2009, but an increase by 25 percent is expected in 2010.
15 airlines are now offering flights to 16 destinations at Vilnius Airport, and since mid-December four new routes to Berlin, Munich, Paris, and Tbilisi have been added.
In January 2010, flights to Amsterdam and Rome will be introduced, bringing the number of direct flights from Vilnius to 22, compared to 28 by the end of 2008.
