Jan 08, 2010 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic saw 2009 as another great year for its cargo business.
-Once gain, 2009 proved a record-setting year for us, with a total of 7,925 tonnes of cargo carried, representing an increase by 33 percent against the preceding year, says Toms Andersons, airBaltic Head of cargo.
-Throughout the year, every single month was delivering volumes over 2008, and a 100-percent increase in mail volumes helped us to get through a rather depressing first half of the year, followed by a good recovery in cargo volumes from September onwards.
-Transit cargo has invariably comprised around 50 percent of our traffic at Riga, but this proportion has grown further through 2009 to some 70 percent due to a general decline in Latvian export and import volumes.
-New customers, recovery in market and 12 new routes opened in 2009 have all contributed to our growth that will be further boosted by a number of new routes to be opened in 2010, including routes to Madrid and Belgrade already communicated to the market, says Mr Andersons.
