Oct 12, 2011 (newstodate): Air Greenland is following the current debate over the country's future airport infrastrucvture very closely.
-It is an interesting discussion and Air Greenland is of course highly aware of the commission's studies and have of course also been a part of the process through consultation responses, says a spokesperson from the carrier.
-In our consultation response, Air Greenland has recommended to maintain the Atlantic airport in Kangerlussuaq and in addition to expand the runways in Ilulissat, Sisimiut and Nuuk from 799/950 m to 1199 m.
-We have also recommended building a similar runway in Qaqortoq and to stop using the airport in Narsarsuaq as an Atlantic airport.
-These recommendations are based on the assumption that overall a centralization of Atlantic runways will ensure a higher number of frequencies in contrast to a decentralized structure, such as has been the case with the use of Narsarsuaq.
-In this context it is important to consider the weather conditions. The airport in Kangerlussuaq is stable regarding weather conditions therefore, the airport can ensure a higher level of regularity than the coast cities.
-As an alternative, we have recommended to move the Atlantic airport in Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk and to move the airport in Nuuk to an area where the runway will be less exposed during high winds.
-The political discussion of the commission's proposal starts this week, which we of course will observe with interest, she says.
