Oct 06, 2011 (newstodate): This year's Hajj pilgrimage provides a new business opportunity for the Latvian carrier SmartLynx Airlines.
As its first Hajj contract, the carrier has landed a contract with the Saudi Arabia-based operator NAS Air to provide aircraft capacity for transportation of Indian Hajj pilgrims to Mekka and Medina, in Saudi Arabia.
During the period from 28th of September 28, 2011, until end of Hajj 2011, approximately in December, one SmartLynx aircraft will be based in Delhi, India, to gather pilgrims from local destinations and take them to Jeddah or Medina, with a short stop in Ras al-Khaimah in the UAE.
Based at Riga Airport, SmartLynx Airlines was acquired by the Icelandair Group in 2006, but now put up for sale as the Icelandair Group has returned to core business.
