Feb 22, 2011 (newstodate): After a prolonged delay, the Russian airport at the Altai Republic's Gorno Altaisk Airport is expected to start business by September 2011.
The Russian federal government has invested in the expansion of the airport's runway to 2,300m, complete with new taxiways, apron area, as well as installation of new navigation equipment enabling the operations of aircraft including the Superjet 100 and Boeing 737.
The airport was formerly state-owned, then sold to a Moscow-based company Sibmost that is pressing for speeding up the completion of the project, long overdue.
Development projects were launched in 2008, and initial plans were to open up for commercial traffic from 2009, later adjusted to 2010 - and now plans are to open flights by autumn 2011.
