Apr 08, 2011 (newstodate): Ever since the launch of services in 2004 at Oslo Gardermoen Airport, Continental Airlines has seen a steady cargo performance in the Norwegian market. Now the situation is more volatile.
-We do see the effects from the decrease in Norwegian exports of fresh salmon to the US market and certainly miss that cargo, says a spokeswoman from Kales, the carrier's cargo GSA in Norway.
-Anyway, we are working hard to fill up the cargo compartment on Continental's daily Boeing 757-200 flight from Oslo to New York Newark Airport, and commodities now are primarily ships spares, equipment for the oil exploration industry, and Norwegian forwarders' consolidations of shipments for the US market beyond New York.
The Boeing 757-200 aircraft will accommodate around two tonnes of cargo on flights with a full passenger load, but Kales has occasionally been able to send off up to five tonnes of cargo during periods with less passenger bookings.
After a period of strong growth in demand for Norwegian seafood to the US market especially during 2008 and 2009 due to the shortfall of salmon exports to the USA from Chile, the situation is now more or less back to normal, and volumes from Norway have gone down significantly.
As late as in 2009, Norway's export of fresh salmon to the US market grew by about 40 percent, y-o-y, generating some 3-4,000 tonnes of salmon by air per month.
