May 25, 2011 (newstodate): From September, the Latvian company CargoRix Charters plans to launch freighter operations from China to Latvia.
CargoRix Charters, based at Riga Airport, will contract Polet Air Cargo to operate an IL-96-400T freighter from a yet-undisclosed destination in China to Riga, with some 10 percent destined for the Baltic market and 90 percent transferred to other markets, primarily Russia as well as Belarus, Poland, Ukraine and countries in Western Europe.
-The traffic will be driven by Chinese exporters and freight forwarders, and we will set up a trucking distribution network together with partners including Schenker Latvia, says Aigars Dobelnieks, CargoRix Charters commercial director.
-Plans are to offer two or even three weekly flights during the high season while scaling down to one weekly services outside the peak period, says Mr Dobelnieks.
The new project will become a competitor to another Baltic company, Lithuania's Hoptrans that operates a weekly Jade Cargo Boeing 747-400F flight from Shanghai to Kaunas Airport, also transferring the ex-China shipments to a range of destinations in Europe by trucking services.
