Nov 07, 2012 (newstodate): In October, Lithuania's Siauliai Airport continued its growth in cargo volumes through 2012.
A total of 527 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport, an increase by 33 percent, y-o-y.
During January-October 2012, the airport has thus handled a total of 4,530 tonnes, almost 50 percent more than in 2011.
Driving growth in volumes at Siauliai Airport is the increase in ex-China exports to Russia flown into Istanbul, Turkey, and transferring via Siauliai Airport for trucking to destinations in Russia, but export shipments of live animals and other special cargoes have also increased through the year.
A master plan worked out by the Dutch consulting company NACO is currently under evaluation, and pending the final political approval the airport will be developed further as a key cargo airport including the setup of a free-trade economical zone and a logistics center.
