Dec 13, 2012 (newstodate): The Norwegian manufacturer of ULDs, Nordisk Aviation Products has now started production and deliveries of an unspecified number of UltraLite AKE unit load devices for Finnair's fleet of wide-body aircraft.
Finnair placed its order with the manufacturer in October 2012, selecting the lightweight ULDs that promises improved fuel economy and significant reductions in CO2 emissions.
The Nordisk UltraLite AKE containers, used for efficiently storing cargo and luggage, weigh 55 kilograms, about 25 kilograms lighter than Finnairs current ULDs, and this will save Finnair approximately 800 tonnes in fuel and more than 2,500 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Finnair is committed to reducing its per-seat CO2 emissions by 24 per cent from 2009 to 2017.
