Apr 24, 2012 (newstodate): Liberalization of the air services agreement between Russia and Italy is now opening a fresh window of competition.
So far the agreement has allowed only one designated carrier from each side to offer scheduled services between points in the two markets, favoring especially Aeroflot that has been able to maintain high rates on the flights.
Now, the situation is changing as Aeroflot and Alitalia will see authorities allowing for new entrants into the market after a new agreement was ratified in February 2012.
Applicants will have until April 25, 2012, to apply for traffic rights, and among Russian carriers reportedly knocking on the door to compete with Aeroflot are Transaero, UTair, S7, Rossiya Airlines, Ural Airlines, I-Fly, Orenburg Airlines, Vim Avia, Donavia, Nordwind, Yakutia Airlines and Taimyr Air Company.
From the Italian side, Wind Jet is expected to register.
