Apr 16, 2012 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Karaganda Sary-Arka Airport is to seek a role in airfreight from China to Russia.
After the establishing of the common customs region including Russia and Kazakhstan in 2011, Karaganda Sary-Arka Airport hopes to attract a share of the cargo on the Trans-Asian and Trans-Siberian routes as the airport is already providing several carriers with technical fuel stop services on the routes.
So far, the airport has not seen any cargo at all, but hopes are to attain at least 1,000 tonnes in 2012.
With the common customs region, airlines can lift off cargo destined for Russia at Karaganda Sary-Arka Airport and truck it into Russia, avoiding the congestion at the Moscow airports that now handle some 83 percent of Russia's total air cargo volumes.
