Sep 24, 2012 (newstodate): Plans are on the table for a major expansion Khrabrovo Airport serving Kaliningrad, the Russian Baltic Sea enclave.
The airport now has some 1.2 mio passengers per year, but almost devoid of passenger facilities and comfort.
Plans are to develop the airport to facilitate the handling of up to 2.3 mio passengers by 2014 with potentials for a further doubling of the volumes.
Before the end of 2014, the airport will have a new passenger terminal, a renovated runway, currently 2,500m long, new taxiways and facilities for handling of air cargo.
Behind the project is a Russian investment company Aeroinvest supported by the regional government.
The airport was earlier planned to establish a role as a major Europe-Russia hub by KD Avia that, however, went bust by the end of 2008.
Hopes are now that a new locally-based carrier may be established to lift Kaliningrad as a new important destination
