Jan 31, 2013 (newstodate): Turkmenistan has embarked on a large-scale project to upgrade the capital's Ashgabat International Airport.
The full program is slated for completion by 2016 when the airport will be able to handle up to 14 mio passengers annually.
Winning the tender in 2012 for the project was the Turkish company Polimeks that will now be responsible for construction of the new passenger terminal, a VIP terminal, a cargo terminal with an annual handling capacity at 200,000 tonnes, a new ATC tower, a maintenance hangar for three narrow-body aircraft, new fueling stations and many other infrastructural elements.
Also comprised by the plans is construction of a new 3,800m runway allowing for traffic by all types of aircraft including Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8.
