Oct 14, 2013 (newstodate): Iceland is expecting the volumes of passengers through Reykjavik's capital airport at Keflavik to be increasing significantly over the coming years, driving the need for expansion of the airport's infrastructure.
Keflavik Airport was handling some 2.38 mio passengers in 2012, and the volume is expected to rise to some six mio passengers over the coming 10 years due to more intercontinental traffic by Icelandair and growing volumes of European passengers by other Icelandic and European airlines.
During the first nine months of this year, the airport has handled a total of 2,180,759 passengers, compared to 1,907,776 in 2012 - an increase by 14.3 percent, y-o-y.
This will add the stress on both terminal facilities and runway infrastructure, but the Keflavik Airport is to benefit from the vast areas left idle after the retreat by the US air force installations adjoining the civilian airport.
While discussions have started, there are currently no detailed plans for the future expansion of the airport infrastructure.
