Oct 04, 2013 (newstodate): Norway's export volumes of fresh salmon to the global marketplace are almost unchanged, compared to last year.
-The situation is still marked by the embargo on Norwegian salmon exports by the Chinese government since the award of the Nobel prize in 2010 to a Chinese dissident, says Morten Svendsen, Salmosped.
-It is of course a problems for our exporters as the Chinese market, together with Japan, was indeed a main driver. But instead, a number of smaller markets have increased to compensate for the shortfall of business with China. Overall, our market has become somewhat more fragmented but still remains stable with minor up- and downward adjustments.
-As for uplift capacity, we have seen a strong increase as more airlines are now serving Oslo, also including freighter operations by Qatar Airways and Asiana Cargo in addition to Korean Cargo that has been a stable provider since March 2004.
-Overall, air cargo rates have remained more or less on the same level now for quite a long time, mostly reflecting the vacillations in fuel prices. For the airlines, pricing margins are very narrow but anyhow they still seem to attracted by the salmon exports.
-Almost all airlines operating into Oslo will carry salmon as belly cargo, except Lufthansa that still seems to have opted out of the market, says Mr Svendsen.
