Dec 02, 2013 (newstodate): There is a market for airfreight services in the Faroe Islands. But - it is highly imbalanced..
-The introduction of Atlantic Airways' Airbus A319 flights between the Faroe Islands and Denmark has certainly grown the volume of air cargo at Vagar Airport, says Jakup Sverri Kass, Vagar Airport Manager.
-We hope to see this trend continuing and even growing as the carrier is now to develop a new strategy for its future in connection with the recent change of management.
-The problem is, though, that while there is a huge potential in air transportation of the Faroese fresh seafood exports, inbound volumes are quite limited due to the small scale of the market. This makes a dedicated freighter service less feasible on a round-trip basis.
-Another factor making the air cargo business difficult is the abundance of sea cargo capacity, with several maritime companies offering frequent connections to harbors in the UK and elsewhere.
-This of course means that sea transport rates are very low. There would still be room for more air cargo services - but a fresh approach is definitely needed, says Mr Kass.
