Jun 25, 2013 (newstodate): The decision by SAS to invest in new aircraft for its intercontinental services is a clear sign of the carrier's confidence in its ability to survive.
This summer season is marked by a strain on aircraft capacity on the long-haul services, requiring the carrier to lease Boeing 767 aircraft to operate some of its flights between Copenhagen and New York.
According to the MoU now signed with Airbus, SAS will take delivery of its first of eight Airbus A350-900 XWB aircraft in 2018, but already in 2015 the fleet will be upgraded with the delivery of the first couple of A330-300 Enhanced to gradually replace the seven Airbus A340-300 when their current leasing agreements expire.
SAS has placed orders for four new Airbus A330-300 aircraft, adding to its existing fleet of four A330-300 aircraft.
Besides the eight new Airbus A350-900 XWB aircraft, the carrier has also secured options for a further six aircraft.
SAS earlier placed orders with Airbus for delivery of 30 Airbus A320neo with an option for a further 11 aircraft.
These new aircraft will be delivered from the second half of 2016 till 2019 and based at the hub at Copenhagen Airport.
