Aug 09, 2013 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo's new freighter strategy since March 2013 does not yet seem to have any significant impact on the monthly cargo volumes reported by the carrier.
In July 2013, Finnair Cargo saw its total cargo volumes by only 5.8 percent, y-o-y, to 12,888 tonnes, while volumes during January-July 2013 were still down 5.7 percent, y-o-y, to 81,947 tonnes.
Volumes carrier on the airline's passenger services in July were 5.2 percent to 9,975 tonnes, while volumes on freighters increased by 7.9 percent to 2,912 tonnes.
In January-July 23013 volumes on pax flights were down 1.5 percent to 64,662 tonnes, while volumes carried by freighters were down 19.3 percent to 17,087 tonnes.
The main driver in cargo on pax flights remained the Asian traffic that increased only 2.1 percent, y-o-y, in July to 7,210 tonnes, while down in January-July by 4.5 percent to 45,987 tonnes.
In total, the carrier's cargo capacity exceeded market demands, causing load factors on both the N American and Asian traffic to drop by 2.5 percentage-points in July, and by four and 5.6 percentage-points, respectively, during January-July 2013.
Starting from June 6, 2013, Finnair introduced an Airbus A340-300 aircraft on Thursday morning flights between Helsinki and Brussels, its new European cargo hub.
Finnair Cargo is already operating MD-11F rotations on the freighter route between Brussels and Helsinki on Saturdays and Sundays.
In addition to these operations, Finnair operates up to four daily narrow-body flights between Helsinki and Brussels as well as scheduled road feeder services between the two hubs.
