Aug 05, 2013 (newstodate): After the slack summer season, the Turkish carrier ULS' freighter traffic is expected to pick up again at Estonia's Tallinn Airport.
Plans have long been on the table for selling the cargo capacity ex-Tallinn on the return leg to Istanbul to optimize the freighter operations - but so far with limited results.
-We can actually sell the cargo capacity already, but only from Tallinn to Istanbul, says Toomas Orukivi, ULS Tallinn export sales manager.
-As the demand for exports point-to-point to Istanbul is rather limited we would like to expand our business by offering transfer options via Istanbul in cooperation with other airlines. Here the problem is, however, that ULS is not a member of the IATA Clearing House, which is holding the process back.
-Without this membership, we would have to sign a huge number of individual contracts and agreements with a wide range of partners, which is obviously not a feasible venue.
-So, we will have to wait and see if and when ULS decides to join the IATA Clearing House, being in the meantime in the market to attract whatever cargo destined for Istanbul we can possibly find, says Mr Orukivi.
During the season, ULS normally operates 35-40 monthly freighters from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Tallinn Airport carrying shipments destined for the Russian market.
