Jan 13, 2014 (newstodate): Etihad is to build its Etihad Regional-concept wider to comprise a number of smaller regional carriers forming networks to feed traffic to and from small regional markets into Etihad's network.
First to add content to the idea was the Swiss carrier Darwin Airlines, now renamed Etihad Regional and operating a small fleet of SAAB aircraft.
Speculations have been that Etihad might soon announce taking a stake in the Latvian carrier airBaltic that has been searching for a strategic partner and investor for about two years.
But responding to the question about a stake in airBaltic raised by newstodate at today's Air Berlin/Etihad joint press conference, Etihad's CEO James Hogan just said "No!"
Instead the Latvian carrier might find a future as member of Etihad Regional though this was not commented upon by Mr Hogan.
airBaltic is already cooperating with Etihad in the form of a new route between Riga and Abu Dhabi launched on December 16, 2013, and operated by airBaltic using a leased Airbus A319 aircraft.
