Aug 22, 2014 (newstodate): Sweden is seeing air cargo volumes at two of three leading airports rising in the first half of this year.
Together, the airports of Stockholm Arlanda, Malmo Sturup and Gothenburg Landvetter handled 114,592 tonnes of cargo during January-June 2014, up 2.1 percent, y-o-y.
Contributing negatively to this over-all increase was however Gothenburg Landvetter Airport that saw volumes down by 15 percent to 33,537 tonnes after Emirates SkyCargo's reduction of freighter frequency from three to two weekly rotations from the start of the year.
In addition, Gothenburg is heading for an even steeper decline in volumes from July 1, 2014, as Emirates stopped its flights at the airport entirely, moving instead all Scandinavian freighter operations to Copenhagen Airport.
On the positive side, cargo volumes at Stockholm Arlanda Airport were up by 11.9 percent, y-o-y, to 68,831 tonnes, notably driven by Emirates as well as growing international cargo volumes lifted by Norwegian.
Malmo Sturup Airport also saw cargo volumes rising by 8.6 percent to 12,223 tonnes thanks especially to new flights by the Russian carrier Atran's weekly Boeing 737-400F freighter from January 9, 2014, feeding cargo into Moscow and the route network by its owner, AirBridgeCargo that also launched a weekly Boeing 747-8F service from April 2014.
