Dec 09, 2015 (newstodate): As one tangible result from strategic efforts by Riga Airport to push its business development, the airport has now been certified as an entry and transit point for handling of perishables between EU and non-EU markets.
With strong lobbying by Riga Airport and in coordination with stakeholders including handling companies, airBaltic, Latvian Customs and the country's State Food and Veterinary Service, Riga Airport was opened as of December 8, 2015, for import and transfer of food and non-food animal products between EU and non-EU countries.
The official EU Border Inspection Point at Riga Airport was opened some time ago, but so far it was used mainly for NATO's ISAF freighter traffic.
An agreed and signed procedure is now in place between airBaltic, North Hub Cargo, FVS and Customs, and it can be applied to other airlines and handling companies, increasing the competitive advantages of the airport.
