Feb 18, 2015 (newstodate): The Icelandic cargo carrier Bluebird Cargo is adding another freighter aircraft to its fleet in 2015.
-Currently undergoing conversion, a second Boeing 737-400 freighter will be delivered on an operating lease contract by end of February 2015, bringing our fleet to a total of six Boeing 737 freighters, says Steinn Logi Bjornsson, Bluebird Cargo Chairman of the Board.
Sources claim that there is a growing shortage in the market of Boeing 737 aircraft for conversion to freighters, but this view is not shared by Bluebird Cargo.
-There is really a lot of echo in this market. Very often a crowd of operators are scrambling for the same aircraft type, but in the end they are mostly competing for the same tenders, creating a false sense of shortage of aircraft.
-We can find the Boeing 737 aircraft we need, and given today's rather low fuel prices and the comparatively low capital costs of this aircraft, we consider the Boeing 737 converted freighters rather economical, and this aircraft type will remain at the core of our business in the coming years as well, says Mr Bjornsson.
With HQs at Reykjavik, Iceland, Bluebird Cargo operates for integrators DHL and UPS on European routes.
Bluebird Cargo is owned by BB Holding, a 50/50 enterprise between the investment group Haru Holding and Steinn Logi Bjornsson, formerly serving as Icelandair SVP Marketing & Sales.
The company is managed by Skuli Skulasson as managing director and operates a fleet soon comprising four Boeing 737-300F and two Boeing 737-400F.
