Apr 20, 2016 (newstodate): The Russian aircraft manufacturer Aviastar-SP, based in Ulyanovsk, has decided to stop production of two aircraft types.
The decision concerns the production of the TU-204 and the AN-124 Ruslan freighter aircraft.
The strategic freighter Antonov An-124 Ruslan was designed by the Antonov design bureau in Ukraine, then part of the USSR, but changes in the geopolitical situation, much exacerbated by Russia's current rifts with Ukraine and West, has made the continued cooperation unfeasible.
As from now, Aviastar will only secure continuous upgrading of the existing aircraft, some 26 of which are still estimated to be airworthy.
In February, 2006, NATO member countries in the Strategic Airlift Interim Solution, SALIS, and Ruslan company entered a contract providing for the stationing of two AN-124 aircraft at Leipzig Halle Airport, while another four AN-124 aircraft are allocated upon request as needed by the NATO and EU members of SALIS.
