Aug 02, 2016 (newstodate): Hungary's Budapest Airport saw brisk growth in its cargo volumes during the first half of this year.
The airport handled a total of 51,095 tonnes of cargo during the period - an increase by 11.3 percent, y-o-y.
June 2016 actually saw this year's so far largest volume, totaling 9,602 tonnes, up 18.9 percent, y-o-y.
Volumes on freighter services are largely responsible for the strong growth, but belly cargo is also growing significantly, according to the airport.
Latest "newcomer" to the airport is Qatar Cargo from March 3, 2016, operating an Airbus A330-200f carrying up to 60 tonnes of payload.
Already from June 30, 2012, Qatar Airways Cargo launched a direct twice-weekly freighter service between Doha and Budapest with an Airbus A300F freighter aircraft, but pulled out again in 2013 citing commercial reasons, and the fleet capacities were reallocated to other operations.
Luxembourg-based Cargolux has long been serving the airport with freighter traffic, and since July 18, 2011, Turkish Cargo has been online at Budapest Airport, while Emirates Cargo also introduced a weekly Airbus A330-200F freighter call at Budapest from November 2014.
Based on traffic forecasts, Budapest Airport has commenced construction of a new logistics base right next to Terminal 1 for one of the major European parcel services.
In addition, Budapest is preparing for the construction of a new air cargo base in the close proximity of Terminal 2, where warehouse and office capacity for handling up to 200,000 tonnes annually will be implemented in the next few years.
