Jan 26, 2017 (newstodate): Norway is to put pressure on the coming aviation talks with Russia to open up for freer access for commercial flights through Russian airspace.
As matters stand now, SAS has for 60 years been the only designated carrier in the agreement between Russia and "Scandinavia", blurring the fact that today not only SAS, but other carriers registered in Denmark, Norway and Sweden are in the air with intercontinental flights to and from Asia.
The issue is especially crucial to Norwegian that has obtained rights to fly through Russian/European airspace on flights to Thailand but remains barred from flights on the Siberian air lanes that would allow for opening of flights to other Asian destinations including Singapore and China.
Today, aviation talks with Russia are performed jointly by representatives from Norway on behalf of all three Scandinavian countries, and the next meeting is slated for February, 2017.
Besides the carrier Norwegian, exporters of Norwegian seafood to the Asian markets are also increasingly airing demands for better access for cargo operations from Norway to Asia through Russian airspace.
