Nov 22, 2017 (newstodate): With the first operation on November 13, 2017, Bakkafrost, the Faroe Islands' leading producer and exporter of salmon products is now sending fresh salmon on SAS flights from Vagar Airport directly to the world markets.
Entering a cooperation with SAS Cargo's forwarding arm Trust Forwarding and the Faroe Islands Postal authority, Bakkafrost has booked firm allotments of four tonnes of fresh salmon on the up 12 weekly SAS flights from Vagar Airport to Denmark's Copenhagen Airport for transfer into SAS' intercontinental route network.
-This is a new opening for Bakkafrost, allowing us to reach the global markets within only 24-48 hours, says Regin Jacobsen, Bakkafrost owner and CEO.
-It goes without saying that this enables us to deliver prime-quality and high-value products in a range of markets including Asia, North America and other places which has so far been outside our reach.
-From the start, the handling, transfer and transport processes have worked without any flaws and we are highly encouraged by this new logistics solution.
-The volumes now transported by air are, however, only complementary to today's main solution building on transport by sea into Scottish harbors for trucking into London Heathrow and other UK airport for onward air transportation.
-But as volumes carried by air grow in importance, this business may attract other operators to add traffic into the Faroe Islands, and the long-term goal would still be to see the start of a regular freighter service that would really lift our competitive strength in the seafood consuming markets, says Mr Jacobsen.
