Nov 15, 2017 (newstodate): With the first operation on November 13, 2017, Bakkafrost, the Faroe Islands' leading producer and exporter of salmon products has established a new seafood air logistics solution.
Entering a cooperation with SAS Cargo's forwarding arm Trust Forwarding and the Faroe Islands Postal authority, Bakkafrost is now sending a firm allotment of four tonnes of fresh salmon on the 12 weekly SAS flights from Vagar Airport to Denmark's Copenhagen Airport from where shipments are next transferred for carriage on SAS' intercontinental route network, primarily targeting destinations in the USA.
At the same time, the new air logistics solution benefits from the recent installation at Vagar Airport of new scanner equipment capable of handling full-size pallets and ULDs, and allowing Faroese export shipments with full documentation to be transferred into end destinations without additional security scanning.
The new seafood air logistics solution is a supplement to today's main solution building on transport by sea into Scottish harbors for trucking into London Heathrow and other UK airport for onward air transportation.
Bakkafrost has, however, long been searching for a solution as the one now found with SAS Cargo and the Faroese Post.
As said Bakkafrost's CEO, Regin Jacobsen in an interview with newstodate on January 17, 2017:
-As a first step, we will utilize the existing aircraft cargo capacity, and as the markets for our advanced new products develop we will consider the introduction of a dedicated freighter service which will, of course, require a considerable volume and a sound economic basis to secure a sustainable service. This phase may take months, or years, to develop.
Bakkafrost alone now produces around 56,000 tonnes of fresh salmon, and adding volumes handled for other producers the total Bakkafrost production will reach between 60-70,000 tonnes in 2017.
The new cooperation marks a break-through in cargo at Vagar Airport that has long been handling only some 500 tonnes annually while air cargo has never attracted much focus from the country's own carrier, Atlantic Airways that concentrates on passenger transportation.
